about Snehana massage

FAQs

What does it involve?

A generous application of warm, medicated herbal oil over different parts of the body at a time - with sweeping deliberate yet gentle movements chosen specifically to balance the elements in your body, for your constitution.

How does it differ from other massages?

Snehana aims to calm the mind and nourish the tissues and nervous system. It also works deeply at expelling toxins, promoting suppleness and flexibility.
The strokes are generally more sweeping than other massage - and are working at a more subtle level on the elements in the body by increasing certain qualities, rather than working directly on the more gross structural aspects (not deep- tissue).

What oils do you use?

Certified organic, cold pressed, extra virgin Black Seed Sesame Oil is the primary vegetable oil used for Snehana. This is prepared with herbal decoctions to enhance their effectiveness for individual patients. ‘Cured oil’ penetrates the skin more effectively thanks to its high viscosity; helping to nourish the skin from within, repairing damaged skin cells.

The black seed sesame oil is used due to its special qualities; it’s deeply groundling effect assists pacifying the nervous system. Also high in minerals and antioxidants, it has a positive effect on bone mineral density and overall bone health. Regular oil massage can provide relief from arthritis.

What should I wear?

Most of the oil applied is absorbed by your skin; and you can towel off any excess oil, but you may still get slightly oily clothes. Therefore, wear clothes that aren’t too precious. For the treatment you may keep your lower underwear on.

I don’t want oily hair. Can I ask for a ‘no oil’ head massage?

If you have to head out somewhere after your massage, or if you’d rather not go home with oily hair, you can request a ‘no oil’ head massage.

How will I feel afterwards?

You will feel super, super relaxed. If you’ve been pushing yourself too much, this treatment may bring your nervous system to a standstill. You will most likely want to lie down or take it easy and rest afterwards - which is exactly what is recommended. If possible, try to not schedule anything after an Ayurvedic massage.

When should I avoid having a massage?

You should avoid having a massage if you are menstruating, or suffering from a cold, fever, diarrhoea, or any acute illness.
